Problem Comes First: Why the Best AI Demos Don't Start With AI

This article argues that successful AI projects begin with identifying a problem first, rather than starting with the AI technology itself. The authors advocate for a "CC/CD loop" – Continuous Calibration & Continuous Development – where AI systems gradually earn autonomy through iterative development and real-world testing, prioritizing trust and reliability over simply adding features. The examples of a mental health check-in app (WeGotYou) and a mail accessibility tool (MailPilot) demonstrate how focusing on user needs and deliberately limiting AI agency in early stages leads to more impactful and trustworthy solutions.
